[sightseeing in Shizuoka report of foreigner] We experience Suruga bamboo fine stripe work of traditional craft

Colander or basket using bamboo seemed to be made with Shizuoka-city for a long time. Above all, "Suruga bamboo fine stripe work" (surugatakesensujizaiku) that is precise, making is beautiful develops in the Edo era and it is still one of the special products of Shizuoka-city and receives designation of tradition craft. By experience-based menu of shunfutakumishuku, we challenged the making of vase.

I experienced!

Sri Lankan native place. We visit Japan in April, 2016. The present is second grader of Shizuoka Eiwa Gakuin University human being society department. Place favorite in Shizuoka is Miho no Matsubara. We like Japanese tradition architecture and go to Shinto shrine and temple.

shunfutakumishuku which folkcraft of Shizuoka can experience

There is "shunfutakumishuku" experiencing this time in place called Mariko, Suruga-ku, Shizuoka-shi. Mountain is near and is place that scenery is beautiful, and is quiet. Stand of souvenir is in facility, too, and tea and cake of Shizuoka, tradition crafts line up. When I came, pretty hina dolls formed a line.

It is experience-based studio where here can make bamboo fine stripe work. Bamboo is planted in front of building and is appearance like Japan. It was written "bamboo dyer bunch" to signboard of entrance. We can experience Suruga armor-back held-flag forming bamboo fine stripe work and woodwork product in this, indigo dyeing called shunkawawasen. There is indigo dyeing called batik in Sri Lanka, but design is totally different from Japanese thing. We became interested in indigo dyeing of Japan. There was studio of ceramic art experience in neighboring building, too.

There is the stage when we enter at the front entrance of experience-based studio. We can see state that craftsman of folkcraft demonstrates on Saturday and Sunday here. Lamp of bamboo fine stripe work was clean.

We choose which work you make before experiencing. We seem to be able to make even thing which there is much number of bamboo, and is complicated with around 60 minutes with small thing in 20-30 minutes. As necessary time and rate are written, it is easy to choose. I chose "vase sagano". As for the experience-based rate, 2,270 yen, indication of experience-based time are 30 minutes.

We make vase with delicate Suruga bamboo fine stripe work

It is finally made with work. As parts are prepared, we make these up from experience. As we could be taught how to make every process in turn, it was very plain. Something like thin stick was "thin strip of bamboo" and was the soft touch. Some one of thin strip of bamboo curved.

This is tool forming thin strip of bamboo. Bamboo becomes able to reduce in the inside of hole and does in thinness by to put bamboo which we cut thin through small hole in turn from big hole, like. By bamboo fine stripe work, thin strip of bamboo of 1.3-1.6mm in diameter is used well. When we bend thin strip of bamboo, we seem to bend little by little while warming up. Job of craftsman seems to need patience.
Round thin strip of bamboo is characteristic of Shizuoka bamboo work. When we made bird cage with bamboo in the old days, it seems to be said that we curled up so that bird which there is inside is not hurt.

Vase is made from part of mouth to put vase in and bottom, thin strips of bamboo of side. When we make, we reverse top and bottom and make. At first, we insert four, straight thin strip of bamboo in hole of loop-formed bamboo becoming mouth. Circle of this bamboo did not cut bamboo into round slices and we bend bamboo which we cut into long pieces and are connected. "Coupling" (tsugite) connecting this joint seems to be original technique of Suruga bamboo fine stripe work.
Thin strip of bamboo shined on the right, left, up and down of circle by one, but next, I set and put and did immediately again.

Then, we put four places, thin strip of bamboo in something like coaster becoming bottom in the same way. Here, we insert bent thin strip of bamboo. Bamboo is knit at this bottom, but this is Japanese traditional how to knit called "Ajiro" (wickerwork).

We adjust to place that position of top and bottom has the same as hole of thin strip of bamboo which we placed earlier so that it is. We did slowly while confirming carefully when we did not run this properly as it was serious to repair later.

We insert thin strip of bamboo if we can fix four places of thin strips of bamboo while by three splash hole this time. As circle of top and bottom does not become stable yet then, we control part that it is at bottom well by hand and work. At first, speed rose though it was not able to come in well when getting used. We confirm whether there are all holes every by three if it finishes coming in one size. We were able to work properly.

We just insert thin strip of bamboo in all holes afterward if we come to here. Finally we paint the root of thin strip of bamboo with bond and are completion. Bond applies using brush, but can protrude a little. Place where we filled is OK if we wipe with the wet dishcloth neatly.

It was completed safely. It is taking a ceremonial photograph with Yagi whom he/she told. It is only process to place thin strip of bamboo that we experience, but, actually, craftsman is alone and seems to do 9 processes before making thin strip of bamboo from bamboo of materials, and finishing.
We can just take completed work home. We want to arrange flower promptly.

We love Japanese folkcraft. We had seen, but this was the first time to experience. It was had a really good experience. When we were getting used to inserting thin strip of bamboo though it was slightly difficult and felt when we had begun to do it and were completed while inserting in turn, we were glad at all by the beautiful finish.
When we saw Suruga bamboo fine stripe work, we remembered Sri Lankan craft. Though type and size of bamboo which we used were different, they were surprised as there was similar part. In addition, we became interested in indigo dyeing of Japan. We want to challenge indigo dyeing next time.
