[sightseeing in Shizuoka report of foreigner] We challenge traditional textile "arrowroot cloth texture" of castle town

Specialty "arrowroot cloth" of Kakegawa. It was characterized by beautiful luster and robustness, and arrowroot cloth popular as craft was used as hakama of samurai in the Edo era. In well-established arrowroot cloth weaver founded in 1870 in Kakegawa-jo Castle downtown area, we experienced arrowroot cloth texture using traditional weaving machine.

I experienced!

Indonesia, 22 years old of Traja native place. Shizuoka Sangyo University Business Administration Department first grader. We participate in international exchange positively. We are interested in cultures in particular and want to go to each place of Japan.

Plant, kudzu without place to throw away both string and root

It is "kotakeya Kokichi Kawade store" of handwoven arrowroot cloth in Kakegawa-city that experiences arrowroot cloth texture. Kakegawa is famous for Kakegawa-jo Castle and arrives at castle from JR Kakegawa Station as a 10-minute walk. "kotakeya Kokichi Kawade store was near the castle, too". There is big signboard written as "arrowroot cloth" in front of shop.

It is this weaving machine that it seems that we enter shop immediately. This wove short arrowroot cloth of width, and another one, wide machines formed a line. We change weaving machine in conformity to product of the completion. In the depths, there seems to be weaving machine which arrowroot cloth of wider width to put on sliding paper-door in Japanese-style room can weave.

In shop, accessory and bag, coin purse, hanging scrolls such as coasters made with colorful arrowroot cloth formed a line. Anything is shiny in surface and is beautiful.

Arrowroot cloth texture experience starts with hearing explanation about arrowroot cloth. The master explains procedure to pick up fiber from history and kudzu of arrowroot cloth to date from the old days while watching video.
We find fiber of kudzu which Buddhist ascetic who trained himself/herself near waterfall in mountains of Kakegawa in the old days is hit to Takimizu and is exposed to white, and there is legend that told these natives how to get fiber.
Artificial flower of kudzu is displayed on wall. Genuine article seems to have a a little bigger leaf. We grow wild to embankment, heap of side and rivers of road and we do in arrowroot at bottom and it is edible and still does.

After having boiled with pot, we rot the epidermis for two days, and vine of kudzu picks up only fiber of the contents. As we use a lot of water as these processes, we work near river. We wash that and dry and tear in small thread.
We seem to change thickness of thread by thing to weave. We tie up several threads which we tore and wind up and do to long thread and will gather up to be usable in weaving machine. "Kudzu tsuguri" means this. It was revealed that it took time plenty before we made thread of kudzu and was surprised.

After having watched video, we had you show hakama which old samurai wore. It is like pants, but is longer. Arrowroot cloth was durable, and people who were great in having been shiny such as silk wore.
In Kakegawa, samurais bought arrowroot cloth sold in shop which there was in castle town as souvenir.

Appearance made in the Edo era around 300 years ago remained in shop. It is written "waste cloth" by hiragana letter "arrowroot cloth" in kanji in table on the back. Afterwards, there are "kappu" and the read times and is reading now with "kuzufu". Hiragana letter used now was different from the old days in character of "no" and was surprised when we saw this reputation.

And we had you show photograph around 100 years ago. It was job of woman that made thread of kudzu, and, from grandmother to young daughter, woman who was in house seemed to work together.

We sit down to weaving machine and weave arrowroot cloth

We made "kudzu end" using thread before experiencing in weaving machine. As knot is small, and the edge of thread turns to "kudzu end" that the edge of thread is over only on one in the same, we seem to be finished neatly when we did to textile.
As the master told slowly, it was possible at once. It was easy than we thought.

It is finally experience in weaving machine. We actually felt that we sat down and wove when easy to work. We thought while thinking that this was because it was tool used from the old days when I was usable freely that we wanted to make thing that I wanted oneself. There is such a weaving machine in Indonesia of mother country, but thread and weavers to employ are different.

As weaver repeats the same thing, it is easy. Between the warps of two cotton let go through beforehand, it lets thread of kudzu go through. When we touched, we felt thread to be slightly cold. This is because thread is got wet. It was slightly uneasy, but we bound together if sharp and were relieved to be said that you should weave again when we might be sharp immediately.
Strength adds to getting kudzu wet, and weaving the person, and this is because it is on strong cloth. It became fun so as to perform ship which thread of kudzu entered-shaped "hi" to the right left, and to let you come, and to weave if we wove.

Whenever pedal sticks to foot of weaving machine and lets thread go through, we step in turn with the right, the left. Then top and bottom of the warp is replaced. We put kudzu thread which we put through the warp toward you as if tapping with parts of called weaving machine if we pedal. We repeat this work. We are finished neatly when we swat slightly harder without gap being enacted for fold.

Part which weaves, and went up becomes like photograph. We became slightly obstinate when we touched in part which became cloth. Thread before weaving got wet, but water fell out and seems to have become strong. Thread of kudzu was the firm feel that we did well unlike cotton and silk.
Thing that we wove has coaster finish in around one week in experience. Near person seems to come to take to shop, but, in the case of distant place, sends to home. We look forward to arriving.

As for having experienced manufacturing called arrowroot cloth texture which was performed for some time in Japan for 800 years, it was had an experience of one being valuable among me. We had not used handwoven plane and challenged for the first time so far. At first, there was place hard to please, too, but became more fun when we wove. We want to weave handwoven arrowroot cloth once again by all means. We wanted to try kudzu thin-sliced raw fish this time from beginning if possible.
